The image above shows the resting place of 5 British Soldiers and 2 Irish Volunteers killed during the 1916 Rising. The graves are situated in the grounds of what was part of Dr. Steeven's Hospital across the road from Heuston Station. The building was occupied for a time by the Eastern Heath Board and is now occupied by the Health Service Executive.

Dean’s Grange Cemetery, Dublin.
John Mulhern 5797 Rifleman Royal Irish Rifles was Killed in Action on the 24 of April 1916. he was the Husband of Annie Mulhern, of 6, Stephen's Place, Lower Mount St., Dublin. He was Originally from County Leitrim he was a hairdresser before joining the Army. Although his headstone records his age as 40 years old cemetery records record him as being 32 years old when he died, he is also recorded in the 1911 census as being 27 years old in 1911 which would put him at 32 years old when he died.

Charles Sanders and Alfred Ellis
Alfred Ellis, Private, 21736, 5th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Died on the 1st of May 1916 from wounds received during the Rising. Aged 19 he was the Son of Alfred and Sarah Jane Ellis, of Leeds, Yorks.

Charles Sanders, (Saunders on CWGC). Private 4953 2nd/6th South Staffordshire Regiment. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has his date of death listed as 4th of May 1916 while his headstone gives his date of death as the 28th of April 1916.

The images above is a small plot known as the 1916 plot containing the graves of Scots Guard Peter Ennis and two Volunteers, Joseph Costello and Andrew Joseph Byrne, killed during the 1916 Rising. The headstones are erected facing each other.

The grave also contains the remains of three civilians who died as a result of bullet wounds received during the Rising, the cemetery records give little information on the three civilians, cause of death is recorded as died from gunshot wounds, the three men were,

  • John Kenyon, although his address is unknown he was brought to the cemetery from Saint Vincent’s Hospital.
  • Joseph Clarke, address unknown, brought from Saint Patrick Dun’s Hospital.
  • William Carrick, address unknown, brought from Saint Patrick Dun’s Hospital.

Peter Ennis
Private Peter Ennis 10404, Private, 1st Battalion Scots Guards, aged 33, was shot dead by the Rebels outside St. Patrick’s Dun’s Hospital about 3pm on the Wednesday afternoon, he was out for a walk while home on leave at the time and was unaware of the presence of the Rebels.

Keely
John Keely died while attempting, with other Volunteers from Rathfarnham, to gain entry to the General Post Office. The group of Volunteers had arrived late on Monday the 25th and were attempting to enter the G.P.O. through a ground floor window when they were spotted by a group of Lancers who charged. John Keely died in the ensuing battle.

John keely is buried in Deansgrange Cemetery, his grave is marked with a statue of Jesus standing on a pillar with the following inscription:

Erected by Susanna Keely in memory of her husband John who gave his life for Ireland 25th April 1916.

John Keely’s is also remembered on the Republican Plot memorial in Deansgrange.

Francis Browning
One of the GR men who died as a result of wounds received in this incident was Francis Browning. He died two days later on the 26th of April from a single head wound. He was 47 years old. Members of the Irish Rugby Football Union Volunteer Training Corps erected a memorial to his memory. The memorial is a large limestone cross on top of a plinth bearing the following inscription.

This stone was erected by the members of the Irish Rugby Football Union Volunteer Training Corps, in affectionate remembrance of Francis Henry Browning B.A. Barrister-at-Law, its founder and commanding officer, and second in command of the 1st Dublin Battalion of the Irish Association of Volunteer Training Corps. He died from wounds received at Northumberland Road Dublin during the Sinn Féin Rising of Easter Week 1916 while returning with his men to Beggars Bush Barracks. He will live in the memory of all as an honourable comrade, and true distinguished sportsman, who by his untiring efforts and splendid patriotism obtained from his corps over 300 recruits for His Majesty’s Forces during the Great European War. Born 22nd June 1868. Died 26th April 1916.



William Lang
William Lang, 3290, Private, 2nd/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, died 26th of April 1916. The inscription on his head stone reads ‘believed to be buried in this cemetery’. A Special memorial has been built containing a headstone for those service men whose graves were lost, this is recorded on the CWGS website as Spec. Memorial.

Around 450 people were killed as a result of fighting during Easter Week. About 50 of these were buried in Dean’s Grange Cemetery. Due to the high death rate in Dublin City during Easter Week many of the bodies were interred without coffins many in mass graves. After Easter Week requests were made to exhumes bodies for re-interment, due to the risk to public health these exhumations were refused. It is believed William Lang was buried in one of these mass graves.

Montague Browne and J S Blissett
This Celtic cross marks the final resting place of Montague Bernard Browne, Second Lieutenant, 2nd/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), died 30th of April 1916. He was the Son of Mary Browne, of Rutland House, North Collingham, Notts., and the late Rev. S. B. Brown, he was 39 years old when he died. Montague Browne was KIA in the fighting at Mount Street Bridge Dublin.

Also commemorated on this cross is J S Blissett Private, 5592, 2nd/7th Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment, he was 23 years old when he died. Blissett also died in the fighting for Mount Street Bridge Dublin.

Frederick Christian Dietrichsen
This grave marks the final resting place of Frederick Christian Dietrichsen, Captain, 2nd/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment), Son of James M. Dietrichsen; husband of Beatrice Agnes Morgan (formerly Dietrichsen). He was 33 years old when he died. He was killed in Dublin in the Battle of Mount Street Bridge on the 25th of April 1916.

Captain Dietrichsen had landed with thousands of other British troops at Kingstown who immediately marched to the fighting in Dublin. On the march Captain Dietrichsen spotted his wife children cheering the soldiers as they marched, Unknown Captain Dietrichsen his wife had brought the children from London to Dublin to escape the Zeppelin raids. Captain Dietrichsen broke rank to embrace his family, it was the last time they would see him alive.

Dietrichsen wife nee Beatrice Morgan was, before the marriage, Beatrice Mitchell. The Mitchells of Blackrock were wine merchants. Her brother Francis was killed in France and there is a memorial window to him in All Saints Church, Carysfort Avenue. She became Beatrice Morgan upon re-marrying shortly after the war.

Grangegorman Military Cemetery.
 
The cemetery contains the dead of both World War, it was opened in 1876 and contains burials of service men and their close relatives. It contains war graves from both world wars. Some of the graves were re-located to this site at a later date (nine from King George V Hospital grounds, two from Trinity College grounds, three from Portobello (Barracks) Cemetery, two from Drogheda (Little Calvary) Cemetery and one from Oranmore Old Graveyard). The "Leinster" graves are in several trenches in the different denominational plots. A Screen Wall Memorial of a simple design standing nearly two metres high and fifteen metres long has been built of Irish limestone to commemorate the names of those war casualties whose graves lie elsewhere in Ireland and can no longer be maintained. Arranged before this memorial are the headstones of the war dead buried in Cork Military Cemetery but now commemorated here. There are now 613 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war, 2 of which are unidentified, and 12 of the 1939-1945 war, 1 of which is unidentified, commemorated here.

Mount Jerome Cemetery Dublin
David WIlson, 5852, 3rd Bn. Royal Irish Rifles, died on the 24th of April 1916. He was born in Lurgan County Armagh and enlisted in Glasgow Scotland.

Glasnevin or Prospect Cemetery

Glasnevin or Prospect Cemetery, the largest in the Republic of Ireland, contains 208 Commonwealth War graves. The graves are not marked in the usual way, all the names are recorded on a memorial in the South-East end of the cemetery.

Glaister R, 1907EA, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve H.M.S. "Colleen." Son of Robert and Ann Glaister, of East Cote, Silloth, UK. Husband of Harriett Glaister, of Ryecote, Skinburness, Silloth, Cumberland. A retired marine engineer.

James, William Edger Moy. 2424, Private Glamorgan Yeomanry, died on the 24th of April 1916 aged 17. Son of Edgar Griffith James and Annie James, of Caerau, Maesteg South Wales.

Neilan, Gerald Aloysius, Lieutenant 10th Battalion The Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Died on the 24th of April 1916.

 

Glasnevin also contains the final resting places of some of the Rebels killed during the 1916 Rising.

John O'Reilly
O’Reilly John, Killed in Action on the 24 of April 1916 in City Hall. He was second in command and had taken command after John Connolly was shot only to be shot himself five hours later. He was 30 years old, married and came from Gardiner Street Dublin. He had been a member of the Irish Citizen Army for 2 years and 6 months.
