Dean's Grange
 
The following Commonwealth War Graves are in Dean’s Grange Cemetery Dublin, Ireland. There are 75 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war and 27 of the 1939-1945 war making a total on 102. A small number of the 1914-1918 war casualties, whose graves cannot be located, are commemorated by Special Memorial headstones.

Hector John Atkinson
The Honourable Hector John Atkinson, Captain Royal Irish Fusiliers, died on the 26th of May 1917. he was the Husband of Sybil Atkinson, of 74, Merrion Square, Dublin.

G H Baird, Captain, Royal Army Medical Corps, died on the 9th of November 1919. Husband of A. Baird, of Sandymount Castle, Sandymount, Dublin.

Charles J Canning, 3173, Corporal, 2nd Battalion The Leinster Regiment died on the 16th of October from illness Contracted while on active service. Served as CULLEN. Son of Mrs. Sarah A. Canning, of 38, Merville Place, Kingstown, Dublin.

Denis Crimmins
Denis Crimmins, SS/9473 (Dev.), Ordinary Seaman, Royal Navy H.M.S. "Vivid" Died on the 21st of February 1920 aged 19. Son of Thomas Crimmins, of 3, Annaville Avenue, Newtown Park, Blackrock, Co. Dublin. Grave Reference W. H. 50.

His CWGC headstone records Denis Crimmins died on the 21st of May but the family headstone records his death as the 21st of February.

Michael Cullen
Michael Cullen, 27207, Lance Corporal, Depot Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Died on the 4th of November 1919 aged 23. Son of Mrs. Ellen Cullen, of 3, Salthill Place, Dun Laoghaire. Grave Reference W. B2. 6.

H Doran, 25600, Private Northumberland Fusiliers, died on the 15th of May 1920 aged 22. Son of Mrs. Mary Doran, of 4, King St., Mitchelstown, Co. Cork. Grave Reference W.J.43.

Arthur Doyle
Arthur Doyle, 30960, Private, Depot Royal Irish Fusiliers, died on the 14th of February 1919 aged 25. Grave Reference W. N. 30.

In his last will and testament Arthur Doyle left his property and effects to his sister miss Annie Doyle of 27 Glasthuel Buildings, Sandycove, Kingstown, County Dublin, he died at the King George V Hospital Dublin which was A specialist neurological unit.

D Doyle, 19310, Private, 8th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Died on the 12th of October 1918.

Hugh Dunne
Hugh Dunne, 12774, Private, 6th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, died on the 27th of January 1915 aged 28. Grave Reference N. T3. 59.

Charles Robert Easton
Charles Robert Easton, 209335, Able Seaman, Royal Navy H.M.S. "Vivid", died at home on the 16th of June 1918 aged 35. Husband of Mary Easton, of 3, Library Rd., Kingstown, Dublin. Grave Reference W. N2. 20.

Joseph John Emblidge
Although not a Commonwealth Commission headstone this marks the final resting place of Joseph John Emblidge from Bray County Wicklow who served with the Dublin Fusiliers during World War 1, he died on the 22nd of June 1935 aged 46.

Thomas Henry Evans
Thomas Henry Evans, 239495, Petty Officer Royal Navy H.M. S/M "H12." Died on the 6th of June 1918 aged 26. He was the Son of B. T. Evans, of Ipswich; husband of Edith Mabel Caton (formerly Evans), of 119, Belvedere Rd., Ipswich.

Daniel Patrick Finn
Daniel Patrick Finn, 393610, Rifleman, 9th Battalion London Regiment (Queen Victoria's Rifles). Died on the 30th of April 1918 aged 36. Husband of E. Finn, of 1, Pembroke Cottages, Donnybrook, Dublin. Grave Reference N. F1. 103.

Although initially a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone this plot in Dean’s Grange Cemetery has become the Finn family plot, others named on the headstone are:

James Fitzpatrick
James Fitzpatrick, S4/093939, Private, Royal Army Service Corps. Died on the 1st of May 1920 aged 39. he was the husband of Beatrice Fitzpatrick, of 17, Upper Baggot St., Dublin.

Ernest Edward Glorney
Ernest Edward Glorney, Lieutenant Royal Flying Corps died on the 25th of November 1916. Born 1887, youngest son of George Glorney graduated from Columbia College New York and the Royal School of Mines South Kensington as a mining engineer.

Robert Kingston Gray
Gray, Robert Kingston, 105154, Corporal, 191st Training Sqdn. Royal Air Force. Died of influenza on the 2nd of November 1918 aged 25. Former member of the Kingstown Boys brigade. Enlisted at the outbreak of the War in 1914 with the Royal Irish Regiment (South Irish Horse) transferred to the R.A.F. in 1917. His remains were returned to Ireland to be buried in Dean’s Grange Cemetery.

Arthur Walter Patrick Inman
Arthur Walter Patrick Inman, Colonel, Royal Army Medical Corps. Died on the 17th of June 1920 as a result of illness or injury received during WW1. He was 66 when he died.

He was the Husband of Mrs. Inman, of "Norwood," Sandycove Avenue, Kingstown, Dublin. He is recorded on the Commonwealth War Graves site as being remembered on the Special Memorial which is wrong, he is buried in the family plot grave reference: 61 N1 South West Section.

W J V Johns
W J V Johns, J/43841 (Dev.), Leading Boatman, H M Coastguard. Died on the 20th of December 1920. Son of William and Pomeroy Johns; husband of K. Johns, of 2, North St., Tywardreath, Cornwall. Grave Reference Special Memorial.

W Joyce
W Joyce, 23040, Lance Corporal, 7th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers transferred to Labour Corps Service Number 336822. Died on the 28th of December 1918 aged 21. Son of Mrs. Margaret Joyce, of Cashel, Recess, Co. Galway. Grave Reference W. W2. 38.

Michael Kelly
Michael Kelly, 2987, Rifleman, Depot Royal Irish Rifles, died on the 5th of August 1916 aged 20. Son of Mrs. E. Kelly, of 6, Temple Rd., Blackrock, Co. Dublin. Grave Reference N. 01. 45. Died in London from wounds received in the battle of the somme. His remains were returned to Ireland at the request of his mother.

P Kelly
P Kelly, 7558, Rifleman 15th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, transferred to Labour Corps Private 329767. Died on the 23rd of November 1919. Grave Reference W. H. 40.

Herbert Colles Kennedy
Herbert Colles Kennedy, 269041, 2b Reserve Brigade Royal Field Artillery. Died as a result of illness on the 15th of November 1918 aged 19. He was born in Naas County Kildare and enlisted in Dublin.

He was the son of Very Reverend Dean H. B. Kennedy BD of the Mariner’s Church Kingstown. He was a student at the Dublin University and joined the Officer Training Corps, he is listed on the school’s WW1 memorial plaque. He died at the Brighton Military Hospital. His body was returned to Ireland and he is buried the family plot in Dean’s Grange Cemetery.

James Kennedy, 20159, Private, 1st battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, died on the 9th of April 1919 aged 37. Husband of Ellen Kennedy, of 49, Monkstown Rd., Monkestown, Co. Dublin. Grave Reference N. Q. 20.

C. Kenny
C. Kenny, 7347, Private, 7th Bn. Royal Dublin Fusiliers, died on the 17th of February 1918.

Martin Lawlor
Martin Lawlor, 10307, Private, 1st Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, died on the 13th of March 1917. Grave Reference N. Q3. 94.

Joseph Bagnall Lee
These two head stones commemorate brothers from the Lee family. Joseph Bagnall Lee Lieutenant with the 6th Royal Munster Fusiliers who was killed in action on August the 7th 1915 at Gallipoli age 27. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. He was the Son of Edward and Annie Lee, of Bellevue, Blackrock, Co. Dublin. He was a Barrister-at law before joining the army and also Senior Moderator, B.A., Ll.D., T.C.D., and Barrister-at-Law. His brother Robert Earnest Lee was a doctor in the Royal Army Medical Corps was killed in the RMS Leinster tragedy, see RMS Leinster link for headstone photo.

Richard Lennon, M2/033377, Corporal, Army Service Corps, died on the 25th of September 1917. Grave Reference N. E1. 90. (Difficult to photograph because the headstone is directly facing a tree)

George Crow Lugton
George Crow Lugton, 10306 DA, Deck Hand, Royal Navy H.M.S. Boadicea II, died on the 10th of October 1918 aged 32. Son of John and Eliza Lugton, of 14, Custom House Square, Dunbar, East Lothian. Grave Reference SW. N1. 91.

Patrick Lynch
Patrick Lynch, M/279006, Private 615th M.T. Coy Army Service Corps, died on the 16 of May 1918 aged 44. Husband of Mary Teresa Lynch of 11, Brighton Cottages, Foxrock Co. Dublin. Grave Reference W. U. 28.

Thomas Maher
Thomas Maher, 16540, Private, 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment, died on the 30th of October 1918 aged 26. Grave Reference W. E1. 22.

Jessie McTaggart
Jessie McTaggart, 14390, Woman’s Royal Air Force, died on the 21st of January 1919. Daughter of Mrs. W. R. McTaggart, of 42/45, South King St., Dublin.

A P Miller
A P Miller, 34784, Serjeant (Signaller), 15th Bty. Royal Field Artillery, died on the 24th of June 1920 aged 30. Son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Miller. His father and grandfather served in the R.A. Grave Reference W. B2. 30.

J Murphy served as J Kinsella, 9584, 4th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, died on the 7th of January 1916. Grave Reference N. N1. 28.

Martin Murray
Martin Murray T/33489 Driver Army Service Corps attached Royal Army Medical Corps. Died on the 30th of June 1918 at home due to injuries received on active service.

Patrick O’Toole, Fireman Mercantile Marine S.S. "Leinster" (Dublin) died on the 10th of October 1918 born in Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire) aged 23 years old.

Son of James and Catherine O'Toole (nee Dent), of 26, Stockton St., Middlesbrough, Yorks, and 1, Summerhill Avenue, Kingstown, Co. Dublin.

James Phoenix
James Phoenix, T/40420, Driver, 3rd Res. Horse Transport Depot Army Service Corps, died on the 27th of April 1918. Husband of Bridget Lalor (formerly Phoenix), of The Old Hotel, Foxrock, Co. Dublin.

Patrick Prendergast
Patrick Prendergast, 90834, Private, Res. Depot Royal Defence Corps, died on the 27th of May 1920. Son of Mrs. Prendergast, of 56, Strand St., Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Edward Reilly
Edward Reilly, 19230, Gunner, School of Gunnery Royal Garrison Artillery. Died on the 13th of May 1917 aged 38. He was the Son of Thomas and Bridget Reilly and the husband of Helen Jane Croft (formerly Reilly), of 2, Brownlow St., Dalston, London, he also served in the South African War.

David Mansfield Saunders
David Mansfield Saunders, Lieutenant Colonel, Royal Army Medical Corps. Died on the 2nd of December 1918. he was the Husband of Margaret B. Saunders, of Kilcolman, Glenageary, Kingstown.

Robert Saunders
Robert Saunders, 12105DA, Deck Hand, Royal Naval Reserve H.M.T. "Grecian Empire", died on the 24 of February 1917 aged 20. Son of Mrs. E. Saunders, of 71, Park Cottages, Ringsend, Dublin. Grave Reference W. T2. 11.

Alfred William Smith
Alfred William Smith, 1191/TS, Engineman, Royal Naval Reserve H.M.S. "Boadicea II", died on the 9th of October 1918. Grave Reference SW. L1. 91.

Edward George Stevens
Edward George Stevens, M/2702, Writer, Royal Navy H.M.S. "Boadicea II", died on the 26 of October 1918 aged 27. Son of Lily Stevens, of 67, St. Leonards Rd., Rodwell, Weymouth, and the late George Downing Stevens. Grave Reference SW. N1. 92.

Joseph Valentine Tierney
Joseph Valentine Tierney, 73108, Corporal, Signal Dept. (Fenny Stratford) Royal Engineers. Fatally injured while serving as a dispatch rider in France, he was returned to British Red Cross Hospital in Glasgow where he died from his wounds, he was 24 years old.

Joseph Tierney’s Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone also commemorates his brother Corporal Walter L. Tierney, Royal Engineers who won the Military Medal, he died on the 12th of January 1923.

The brothers CWGC head stone stands at the foot of the family plot in Dean’s Grange Cemetery, both brothers are also remembered on the family headstone.

Ernest George Tozer, 3204/SD, Deck Hand, H.M.M.L. "233" Royal Naval Reserve, died on the 20 of October 1918 aged 21. Son of Samuel and Sarah Ann Tozer, of 8, Hill St., Ogmore Vale, Bridgend, Glam. Grave Reference SW. S1. 91.

M Tyrell
Tyrell, M., Corporal, 3/5697, 3rd Battalion The Royal Irish Rifles. Died on the 10th of November 1918.

William Williams
William Williams, K/14097, Stoker 1st Class, Royal Navy H.M.S. "Boadicea II", died on the 26th of October 1918. Born Stepney, London. Grave Reference Special Memorial.

Walter Wright
Walter Wright, Assistant Cook, Mercantile Marine Reserve H.M. Yacht "Helga", died on the 19th of October 1918 aged 27. Son of Sarah Wright, of Law View, West Kilbride, Ayrshire, and the late Archibald Wright. The Helga was used against the Rebels in the 1916 Rising and also took part in the rescue efforts of the RMS Leinster. Grave Reference Special Memorial.

Arthur William Young
Arthur William Young, Stoker, 2123/T(Ch), Royal Naval Reserve H.M.S. "Hyderabad", drowned on the 7th of February 1919 aged 34. Son of William and Rachel Young, of South Bank, Yorks.

Charles Edward Harman
Harman, Charles Edward, Colonel, Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Married to Edith Harman and lived at 23 Hogarth Road Kingstown. He died aged 59 on the 5th of January 1915 while stationed in Buttevant County Cork. He served in India as Brigadier General in 1903. His Commonwealth War graves Roll entry records him as Dublin Fusiliers which would have been the last Regiment he served with, the inscription on his head stone reads,

Other soldier’s graves in Dean’s Grange which I have not been able to photograph either because I could not find them or they were so overgrown include.
  • Percy Gerald Gilbert, died at home aged 19, was a Cadet at Royal Military College Sandhurst, he was the Son of Mrs. E. S. Gilbert, of 11, Eaton Square, Monkstown. His headstone is completely cover by the branches of a tree and impossible to photograph but the inscription is legible and reads,

    late Cadet R.M.A. Wollwich
    only son of Lt. Col. And Mrs Gilbert
    Born Umballa India 26 Nov 1899
    Died Monkstown 19 Nov. 1918.


Thomas Christopher Blake
Thomas Christopher Blake, 1906375, Aircraftman 2nd Class Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died on the 30th of September 1945 aged 18. He was the Son of Patrick and Mary Blake, of Dun Laoghaire. The inscription on the bottom of the headstone reads:

Will Those Who Think of Him Today a Little Prayer to Jesus Say. His Parents.

William Breen
William Breen, 13024359, Private, Pioneer Corps. Died 26/08/1941 aged 44. Son of Gerald and Honora Breen, of Dublin; husband of Margaret Breen, of Dublin. Grave Reference St. Mary G74 C4/N.

Andrew Breslin
Andrew Breslin, Master, M.V. "Teasel" (Cardiff) Merchant Navy. Died on the 12th of January 1941 aged 37, he was the Husband of Kathleen Breslin, of Cabra.

William Byrne
William Byrne, 7043411, 6th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Died on the 21st of November 1940 aged 27. Son of John and Mary Byrne, of Dublin. Grave Reference 8. T2/W

Father James Gerard Curran, 211517, Chaplain 4th Class Royal Army Chaplains' Department. Died on the 4th of May 1944 in London. He titled Reverend on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website. He was 37 years old when he died. He is buried in the Holy Ghost Fathers Communal Plot in Dean’s Grange Cemetery.

Herbert Richard Dowse
Herbert Richard Dowse, 1542071, Flight Sergeant (Pilot) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died on the 22nd of October 1944 aged 22.

Also commemorated on this stone is his brother who was killed in action in Germany.

Arthur Patrick Dowse, Di 88035, Flight Lieutenant (Pilot Instructor.) 78 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died over German on the 17th of April 1943 aged 28. He is buried in Durnbach War Cemetery Germany. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC)

John Eager
John Eager, Private, 6405010, 8th Battalion The Royal Sussex Regiment, died on the 12th of August 1940 aged 38. Son of William and Eiscalla Eager; husband of Anne Eager, of Sallynoggin.

James Farrell
James Farrell, 1837131, Aircraftman 2nd Class, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died on the 21st of September 1944. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Grave Reference St. Fintan. Grave F/2.

Also inscribed on this headstone is,

  • Patrick Farrell died June 28th 1939.
  • Annie Farrell died Dec 16th 1949.

Patrick Farrell, 1127676, Private, Pioneer Corps. Died on the 30th of May 1944 aged 38. He was the Son of John and Julia Farrell husband of Annie Farrell.

Thomas Laurence Christopher Farrell
Thomas Laurence Christopher Farrell, 1797500, Aircraftman 2nd Class Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, died on the 8th of June 1945 aged 23. Son of Lawrence and Mary Farrell, of Crumlin, Dublin. Grave Reference St. Fintan. Grave F1/24.

Kevin Finbarr Fidgeon
Kevin Finbarr Fidgeon, 7047368, Fusilier, 5th Bn. Royal Irish Fusiliers. Died on the 24th of November 1941 aged 20. Son of Edward and Margaret Fidgeon of Dun Laoghaire.

His mother is also recorded on his Commonwealth War graves Commission headstone, at some stage the CWGC stone was removed and laid flat on the grave to accommodate the family headstone which records the names of Kevin his Mother and Father and his Sister.

Michael Fitzpatrick
Michael Fitzpatrick, 13122156, Private, Pioneer Corps, died on the 24th of March 1945. Grave Reference Grave 88/93/N.

Peter Harold
